Michigan Republicans Propose Restrictive MAGA Solar Act

Republicans in Michigan have introduced the “MAGA Solar Act” (Maximizing American Grid Affordability Act), aiming to expand community solar and agrivoltaic projects. The bill allows renters and homeowners without rooftop systems to subscribe to solar energy, offers guaranteed savings, and promotes solar development on farmland. However, it also imposes a 20% cap on statewide solar participation, requires local zoning approval, and bans panels manufactured in countries like China, North Korea, and Iran.

While the proposal has been praised by some in the solar industry for providing a conservative pathway to expand solar access, it also faces criticism. Opponents argue that the 20% cap could slow Michigan’s progress toward clean energy goals, and utilities such as Consumers Energy warn that non-participating customers may bear additional costs. The bill is seen as both a step forward for some aspects of solar and a restrictive measure for broader adoption.
