The Next Solar Boom: Why U.S. Solar Capacity May Triple by 2035

The solar capacity in the United States could triple over the next decade, according to the Solar Market Insight 2025 Year in Review report published by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). The report projects that installed solar capacity will grow from 279 GW in 2025 to approximately 769 GW by 2036, representing the addition of nearly 490 GW of new solar capacity during that period.

This projected growth is driven by increasing electricity demand, continued expansion of utility-scale solar projects, and the strong economic competitiveness of solar energy compared to other generation sources. According to SEIA, solar power is expected to remain one of the leading sources of new electricity generation in the United States, playing a key role in the country’s energy transition.
